ITALY
RACE TO THE CENTRE AND THE LEFT?

The reformist `piccolo Ulivo', born with the ambition to guide the centre-left and to complete an exacting transition, put to the test of the armed intervention, confirms a moderate vocation and hinders the united course of the oppositions. While the centre becomes crowded, one begins to think of the need to rebuild the left. Aresti reflects on the characters of `Prodi's list', Chiarante explores the parable of Occhetto, who is in conflict with his companions in the shift.

PARMACRACK
The disintegration of the big economic groups cannot be accidental nor attributable to lack of control. It is an aspect of the transition from `productive capitalism' to `predatory capitalism'; therefore of the return to absolute power in the direction of the big property enterprises, in their various forms. It revives the theme of a large reforming operation which brings into question this set up; as has already happened twice in the course of the last century.

THE LEFT WING AND EMPLOYMENT   italian version
The compromise between capital and work in the golden age of capitalism was not the outcome of a convergence of interests, but of a social and political conflict which had modified the relationships of force and sustained a policy of full employment. It is because of the gradual change of these relationships of force and because of the absence of an alternative proposal to the crises which had opened in the system, that capitalism was able to return, in different contexts, to its original logic.

DEBATE
NON VIOLENCE BETWEEN PRINCIPLES AND POLITICS

In the heated discussion on war and non-violence, which for weeks has been taking place among the Italian left, Rossanda and Mortellaro have taken part with different points of view. Rossanda to restore the distinction between war and violence and to warn that the principle of non-violence does not end up being the same as an interdict against the conflict; Mortellaro to find the extraordinary reality of the principle and of the politics of non-violence in a period marked by the unending pre-emptive war.
