CLEARER IDEAS ON THE ALTERNATIVE
There is a recovery in the USA, though unstable. The crisis in Europe, and particularly in Italy, on the other hand remains. The ‘Ulivo’ is holding on to the usual proposals disregarding reality. But even the alternative left wing repeats itself. To break the grip of the stability agreement, though necessary, is not enough. To accomplish a serious compromise which necessitates an effective change of direction, and not a `marriage of convenience', new analysis and clearer ideas for an alternative are needed.

RESOLUTION 1511 OF THE UN. ONE STEP FORWARD AND TWO STEPS BACK
Has the UN Resolution legitimised the pre-emptive war against Iraq? The fact of a military occupation? Re-established a multi-lateral situation? Is it implied that each act of resistance to the occupying forces is defined as terrorism? There is an indirect masking of the actions of the United States. But the masking does not mean legitimising and above all does not authorise a favourable vote in parliament for the continuing Italian military mission, neither does it repeal the Art. 11 of the Constitution.

THE ONLY PROGRAMME OF THE `RIFORMISTI'
The new `riformisti' rarely discuss good reforms in depth. But they have their own programme and it is dangerously like the past, where the divided left wing was defeated: in their foreign policy they accept the imperial supremacy with a few `benevolent' modifications. In the economic policy: a neo-liberalism hardly mitigating the costs of social welfare. This does not greatly benefit a large coalition which wants to defeat Berlusconi and prepare to govern. The time to change is here and now.

DISCUSSING ENRICO BERLINGUER
Rossana Rossanda reflects again on the politics of Enrico Berlinguer and what Fassino has written on this. But the analysis extends over a longer period of time, pointing out a fundamental error in the choice of the historic compromise and in the national unity. There are heavy consequences: disagreement with a powerful social movement which had opened the way to a change in the real balance of power; subordination in political relationships. The successive development was not enough to restore them.
