AGAINST BERLUSCONI, AND AFTERWARDS
A new left wing alliance, today in opposition, tomorrow in government: that is the hope circulating in the Italian left wing party. How realistic is it? Bertinotti and Magri, in two different articles, although offering two different answers, open a necessary discussion. They have a common conviction: there is no guarantee of success; the need for extra forces in the field is imperative; the programmes and the hopes of the people have animated the great struggle for two years.

DISCUSSION IN CGIL   italian version
After the defeat of the referendum we are approaching a difficult autumn. The fragmentation of the labour market; negotiations under attack; the dismantling of public welfare and social security; the free trade programme of the Government and the Confindustria (the Italian Manufacturers’ Association) does not leave much breathing space. An answer is necessary: the renewal and the amplification of the direction of the last two years’ struggle, or the surrender to a too powerful opponent? Not only a trade union choice.

THE WORLD IN THE DARK
The blackouts in Italy and the USA blatantly revealed the damage of the privatisation policy. The crux of the matter is made evident by the darkness in the western metropolises: the price the world pays to the dominion of the lords of petroleum. With this dossier, La Rivista investigates the strategic challenges to the energy model and documents the possibilities and opportunities offered by a radical, but possible, change in the pattern of consumption and in the use of renewable sources.

THE WTO AT CANCUN: AN OLIGARCHY IN CRISIS?
In Cancun, in Mexico, the globalisation leaders are preparing to regain the upper hand after their defeat in Seattle. Health, universal services, education, life-saving drugs; all these are at risk of being privatised, of being taken over by multinationals. The movement’s protest has however left its mark and poor and developing countries are uniting to defend themselves. Samir Amin outlines an alternative platform and Luciana Castellina describes the field of conflict.
